Liposuction procedure is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery in the United States today. And legs, thighs and hips liposuction is the most-performed liposuction procedure of all! Several methods are used to reshape the legs, thighs, hips and buttocks. Most often, tumescent liposuction is used in this area. This involves injecting large amounts of saline solution combined with local anesthetic (lidocaine) into the area, which causes the tissue to become engorged and tight. The surgeon then makes several small incisions, inserts a small tube called a cannula, and vacuums out the excess fat and fluid. With this variation of legs, thighs and hips liposuction, less damage to tissue occurs than with traditional dry or wet liposuction.
A more recently-developed type of legs, thighs and hips liposuction is ultrasonic-assisted liposuction, or UAL. The surgeon uses sound waves at a high frequency to liquefy the fat cells, which can then be easily removed by vacuuming to create a more balanced body shape. Still another option for body sculpturing in smaller areas is called mesotherapy. This technique involves using very tiny needles to inject small amounts of various fat-burning medications, sometimes including Botox®, into the central layer of the skin. Mesotherapy is not, however, a suitable substitute for legs, thighs and hips liposuction when substantial reshaping of the lower body is desired.
